Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Benefits, Protocols, and Common Questions
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, or HBOT, is a health option wherein an individual breathes in pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber.…
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is delivered in a pressurized, medical-grade chamber under professional supervision. At Hyperbaric Centers of Southwest Florida, HBOT is provided as part of ongoing care plans, and is designed to support recovery and chronic condition management in appropriate cases.
HBOT is based on numerous laws of physics. “Henry’s Law” states that the amount of a gas dissolved in a liquid is in proportion to the pressure of the gas above the liquid, provided that no chemical action occurs. “Boyle’s Law” states that at constant temperature, the volume and the pressure of a gas are inversely proportional. This means a gas will compress proportionately to the amount of pressure exerted on it.
was opened as a result of the journey our family has taken in caring for our loved ones. The doctors never suggested hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
And when we discovered it, it was not available.
a monplace rated at 3.0 ATA (atmospheres absolute) and a dual lock multiplace chamber rated at 6.0 ATA (see below for chamber specifications).

Curious how hyperbaric oxygen therapy supports overall wellness?
Watch this interview with Bob and Elly at Hyperbaric Centers of Southwest Florida, where they discuss how HBOT fits into general health and new research around longevity and recovery.

I was recommended to HBOT by a physician to help heal a wound I have had for nearly three years. I am not diabetic. I have an autoimmune disease that has been slowly calcifying my small blood vessels leaving me with skin, colon, lung, and kidney problems. After 40 “dives”, my wound is granulating (filling…

Bob and I have had a great experience with our hyperbaric treatments. Both Elly and Bob were so understanding, kind, considerate and helpful. As it turned out, both Bob and I had many special needs and needed a great deal of individual attention. Both Bob and Elly went way beyond what could be expected of…
Miracles happen, and I am living proof. 🙏One year ago, I was facing one of the biggest battles of my life. I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema. It led to open-heart surgery to replace my aortic valve, repair my mitral valve, and place a clamp on a third valve. When I…

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is considered a safe and non-invasive process when administered by trained personnel in a controlled environment. While complications are rare, safety is maintained through standardized protocols and a brief screening to ensure individuals do not have contraindications, such as an untreated collapsed lung or certain ear conditions. Most people find the sessions relaxing, with the most common sensation being a mild, temporary pressure in the ears similar to flying in an airplane.
The cost of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is primarily determined by whether the session utilizes a medical-grade hard-shell chamber or a mild soft-shell unit. Medical-grade sessions that deliver 100% oxygen at higher atmospheric pressures require specialized equipment and trained personnel, representing a higher investment than low-pressure wellness options. Most facilities offer discounted multi-session packages, which are the most cost-effective way to access consistent therapy
A standard hyperbaric oxygen therapy session typically includes 60 to 90 minutes of “time at pressure,” during which the individual breathes 100% medical-grade oxygen at the full prescribed atmospheric level. This timeframe refers specifically to the treatment phase and does not include the additional time required for the initial compression or the gradual decompression at the end of the session. To account for these transitions, most individuals should plan for a total of 80 to 120 minutes per visit to ensure a comfortable and effective experience.
Most people find a hyperbaric oxygen therapy session to be a relaxing and quiet experience, with the only notable sensation being a mild pressure change in the ears. This feeling is very similar to what you experience when an airplane is landing. Once at pressure, you breathe 100% medical-grade oxygen comfortably while resting, napping, or listening to music. Trained personnel guide you through simple techniques to equalize your ears during the initial minutes, ensuring a comfortable transition to the full treatment pressure.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally well-tolerated, with the most common side effect being a temporary feeling of pressure in the ears due to changes in atmospheric weight. Trained personnel guide you through equalization techniques during the session to minimize any discomfort. While rare, some individuals undergoing long-term protocols of 20 or more sessions may experience temporary vision changes, such as a mild shift in near-sightedness, which typically reverses within a few weeks of completing the treatment. Most people simply feel a sense of deep relaxation or mild fatigue immediately following a session.
The number of hyperbaric sessions required depends entirely on an individual’s specific goals, with protocols typically ranging from 5 to 40 sessions. Most structured protocols involve daily sessions to achieve cumulative physiological benefits, though some recovery or wellness goals may utilize a less frequent schedule. Once primary goals are met, a maintenance schedule of one or two sessions per month is a common strategy to sustain results.
Our facility operates as a self-pay center and does not accept insurance. This model allows us to focus on providing flexible scheduling and a broader range of wellness-oriented protocols that often fall outside traditional coverage.
Preparing for your session is simple, and we provide everything you need to ensure a safe and comfortable experience. To maintain the highest safety standards, we follow strict protocols regarding materials and personal care products.
A hyperbaric session is a quiet, relaxing experience that typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. Most clients find the time peaceful and often use the opportunity to nap or meditate.
Most people leave their session feeling refreshed, often reporting a boost in energy or a deeper, more restful night’s sleep.
While every individual’s response is unique, most people report cumulative benefits that improve their overall quality of life. Because the therapy works at a cellular level, results typically build steadily over a series of sessions.
While some feel an immediate “boost,” the most significant and lasting changes typically occur after an initial intensive protocol of 20 to 40 sessions.
